No standard solution possible
“When we first envisioned this project, we couldn't find a single commercial solution that met all of our requirements. And certainly not one that would fit within the limited space of our workshop next to the cyclotron facility,” said Yawen Li, associate professor at the University of Washington. Their needs: a multipurpose hot cell suitable for both research and production, with a solid and integrated transfer system. Von Gahlen took on that challenge and translated the complex need into a smart, compact, and future-proof solution.
Smart and innovative design with full functionality
The result is a thoughtfully designed system with a spacious work area, dual telemanipulators, a dedicated dispensing area and a custom front waste system. “The system fits seamlessly into our limited space and provides exactly the capabilities we need,” Yawen explains.
Elex's integrated solid-target transfer system provides flexibility in transporting targets of different thicknesses; a critical requirement for the university’s diverse applications. “The good integration of the Elex system provides us with exactly the technical performance we were looking for!”
Cooperation and communication make the difference
Throughout the project, Von Gahlen's approach was characterized by commitment, clear communication and focus on quality. “From the beginning, it was clear that we were working with an experienced and dedicated team. The communication with project leader, Theo Bouwman, and Lead Engineer, Jelmer Tiemessen, and the coordination were clear and professional,” Yawen said.
The customer explicitly mentions that good cooperation made all the difference during the design process. “During the design qualification, the conversations were particularly valuable. Thanks to the joint input from Von Gahlen and Elex, we were able to validate critical details and adjust some points of interest that we had not yet anticipated ourselves.”

Quick installation despite setbacks
Von Gahlen also proved its flexibility during the installation phase. Delays at U.S. Customs put pressure on the schedule. Nevertheless, the team (Arian Broekman, Laura Lodewijk, and Matthew Mattson) was mobilized at short notice. “They started immediately and worked with impressive flexibility and professionalism. The installation was completed within a little over two weeks. For me, that’s the proof of Von Gahlen’s efficiency and solution-oriented skills.”
A partnership that leaves you wanting more
Yawen and her colleagues look back with satisfaction: “This project has significantly improved our production capacity. The system is technically strong, practical to use, and completely tailored to our needs. This cooperation was an exceptionally positive experience. We look forward to future joint projects.”
