Isotope storage safes: radiation shielding engineered for your facility
In nuclear medicine and radiopharmacy, handling radioactive isotopes leaves no room for error. Between synthesis, quality control and patient administration, active sources must be stored safely. However, managing high-activity materials brings very specific operational challenges, such as radiation exposure risks for personnel, strict regulatory compliance, and tight cleanroom space limitations.
Without the right storage setup, daily workflows can quickly become inefficient or worse: non-compliant. A standard cabinet won't cut it, and off-the-shelf solutions often fail to integrate seamlessly into a specialized cleanroom environment.
This is where an isotope storage safe comes in. In this article, we explain how these specialized safes are engineered for durable use and how Von Gahlen supports you from initial design to final installation.
What is an isotope storage safe?
An isotope storage safe is a heavy-duty, radiation-shielded cabinet engineered specifically to store radiopharmaceuticals and radioactive sources.
To achieve maximum attenuation, these safes are constructed using high-density lead or an engineered combination of lead and steel. Depending on your facility’s specific workflow, isotope storage safes can be fully customized with varying lead thicknesses, access control systems, specialized handles, and tailored internal and external dimensions.
Unburdening your facility in three structured phases
Rather than adapting your team's workflow to a rigid piece of equipment, the storage solution should be engineered around your facility's exact parameters.
Purchasing lead-shielded equipment is a significant investment that involves multiple departments. To ensure the safe performs exactly as intended without unexpected site issues, Von Gahlen guides you through this complex process using three structured phases:
1. Custom design & engineering
Every facility has unique workflow demands, room layouts, and shielding requirements. Our process begins by mapping out your key parameters: specific intended use, facility location, required lead thickness/shielding level, and precise cleanroom placement.
Following in-depth consultations with your team to review every technical requirement, our engineering department creates a comprehensive 3D design drawing. We present this layout to you for review, allowing for any adjustments before manufacturing. Production begins only after you have given full approval on the final design specifications.
2. Precision manufacturing & lead pouring
The manufacturing process at Von Gahlen is truly unique. Each safe is built around a custom-engineered steel frame designed to meet your specified load capacity, size, and lead thickness. Once the steel framework is complete, high-purity lead is melted in our specialized foundry and carefully poured into the frame structure, ensuring seamless shielding.
After casting and cooling, all individual components transition to our paint shop, where the safe is coated in your color of choice. Once dry, our technical team completes final assembly and quality inspections.
3. Transport & installation
Moving heavy lead-shielded equipment into specialized environments requires expert handling. To make transport and maneuvering as efficient as possible, optional customized base stands can be integrated.
During manufacturing, red lifting eyes are fitted to the safe frame. This allows our installation team to maneuver the safe securely via crane or hoist directly into your cleanroom. Once precisely positioned, the red lifting eyes are removed, and the attachment points are cleanly sealed for cleanroom compliance. Von Gahlen supports and executes the full on-site installation to ensure a turnkey delivery.
